In case you were wondering, the hires pictures in the image gallery published today on Apple's web site do show the iPhone's true resolution. Here is the proof:

Um... What? How does that random math show anything?

The tech specs page states 480x320 as the resolution. Don't you believe the tech specs? And where did you get 380 pixels from? (Not to mention using such 'simple' math on an image that appears to be computer-generated, not a photo of the actual physical product, and is visible at an odd angle with perspective not taken into account...)

Seriously. The iPhone's resolution has been known since day one.

My point was: Apple promotional material is not lying. They did not stick onto the screen a much higher-resolution mock-up image. They might have used a mock-up image but at least it is at the same resolution as what you're gonna get on the device.

That's WYSIWYGG, which is rare in advertising:

What You See Is What You're Gonna Get

Thank you, Apple

So basically, on their site there is a mock-up image (as in, they could make it whatever dimensions they want) and this is proof that they weren't lying about the resolution...

I think he is trying to prove that the photo is NOT a mockup.

Err.. no. My point is: this picture is probably a mock-up but it is a mock-up that doesn't lie about the resolution of the screen. If you stand close enough to your iPhone when you get one, you should see on the actual device the same level of details as on the promotional material. Now I don't make any assumption regarding the other qualities of the screen (such as colors, brightness and contrast) but at least the resolution should be there, and I find it pretty impressive considering the small size of the thingy.

ok. goats

I was promised there wasn't going to be any math involved... :p

But wouldn't the 480 pixels be on the longer run?

Most. Ridiculous. Thread. Ever.

Oops, sorry... did I just bump this thread back to the top again? My bad.

Mathamagic?

Ok, assuming that there was need to verify apples claim to their resolution, first as rdrr points out in a 480x380 resolution, the 480 is bigger (it would be the longer side), the resolution is actually 480x320 (the bigger one still means longer), cosine of an angle means adjacent of right triangle divided by the hypotenuse. It's no wonder where the 380 came from.
