Hey,
I've been googling around to figure out if there's any way to have the iPhoto sharing functionality of iPhoto '08 enabled when iPhoto isn't running - so far, no luck.

While I *could* hack together a iPhoto/DPAP server, I'm stumped by the fact that I can't seem to find a way for OS X to share the photos without iPhoto running in the background.

Anyone?

Sharing with another Mac, or an AppleTV e.t.c.
I.e., iPhoto -> Preferences -> Sharing -> Share my photos.

As far as I can tell, iPhoto must be running. You can launch and hide; it will barely use any CPU cycles when sitting idle, though it will use some RAM.

It may not be what you are after (I don't know Apple TV) but what about if you set up a new user on the remote mac for iPhoto & when you boot, hold option & tell it the directory is the one on the Mac you want to share.

Any good?
