I've upgraded to iLife 09 and ran into a problem with some jpg pictures that all came from the same source.

When I double-click on certain photos (all landscape view) to enlarge them, they expand out, and then go black. If I click on the "Name" button it recognizes faces behind the black but I can't see anything.

I've rebuilt the library and repaired permissions. It doesn't help to reimport the pictures or to rotate them around.

Someone suggestion a Quicktime bug. Is this even possible? Thanks for your help.

recovering originals from blacked out photos

I have exactly the same problem. Some photos turn black after double-clicking on them for enlargment and editing.
I now duplicated one of these photos and pressed 'reprocess RAW' to return to the original version. This picture now appears again in its original state with all editing lost.
I tried to recover the editing by copying the ajustment parameters of the 'black' photo, but they would not show up. (Maybe that is where the problem lies..).
So I had to re-edit; not a big deal in that case and I am glad to have my picture back. I still would be interested to know what actually happend and if the editing can be recovered some how as well.

You can only click "Reprocess RAW" if you are using RAW right? These are just simple JPEGs as far as I can tell that I got on a DVD from a professional photographer (who used film).

Where do you find the "Reprocess RAW" button?

Also, I should note that whenever I click "edit" the photo still isn't viewable. However, when I'm in the edit mode and click on "Effects" and then click on an effect from the choices... the picture shows up.

Thanks again for your help.

This too is happening to me in iPhoto '08 with REALLY large resolution pictures that i scanned (8000x6000) or something like that...

I used preview to make it smaller and it works fine now! :)

This "USUALLY" (stress on usually) means somehow the modified picture has either gotten somehow deleted or corrupted. The Thumbnail and the original should still be in tact which is why you see it before you click on it. I had this happen a few years ago on a few pics. I ended up trying everything under the sun but S & Gs I tried right click "Revert to Original" and voila they came back. I lost all edits I made but got my pics back. Not saying this is your 100% answer but try it. Beyond that restore from Time Machine (.... you do back up ... don't you???) :)

I have the same problem I can see the thumbnail and when I double click on it to open it it come all black with a grey circle with "!" in it ! when I do revert to original it comes back fine ! can Anyone help as this is on all my 10 000 pictures !!!

I used to get this quite a bit in '08. I used to reboot and that'd fix it for a while. I moved to Aperture mid-way through last year so I haven't had chance to try '09.

A reboot's definitely worth a go.
