iPhoto '09 problem

Have transferred photos in iPhoto to new imac computer from old. Old G4 was using 5.0.4 iPhoto, now using '09

Just went to attach a picture to a gmail email, and iPhoto was grayed out.

Next tried to attach same pict to email using Mail ...pictures were not listed in folders with dates as they were previously on old computer.

I'm sure I just don't understand how iPhoto '09 is set up. Appreciate any assistance.
