iPhoto 11 freezing iMac

Did anyone experience iPhoto 11 freezing their entire system? I have a fairly large library, sitting on an external FW800 Hard drive (WD caviar black). My system froze twice (entire system is locked up). I don't think my hard drive is failing, as I'm editing lots of home videos and don't see any issues with iMovie. Prior versions of iPhoto never gave me any problems.

24 iMac, Core2Duo, 4GB RAM, Snow leopard.
