I am running on a G4 800mhz with 1gb of ram, 80GB and 60GB hard drives, Geforce2MX... running tiger, I repair permissions often.

Well... I have around 4000 5.0MP 2.2mb pictures in my iphoto library, randomly as I am browsing my library my iphoto will stop responding or respond very very slowly with hard drive read and write activity at 100% and processor usage around 70% for about 2-5 minutes and then run stable again, It will do it at any random time, even at a time it doesn't seem like it would ever need to do that. . . Is there any way possible to prevent iphoto from doing that?? Whenever it does, I still have 500mb of free ram... It just doesn't make much sense to me. Thanks
