iPhoto and iPhone

While trying to upload some pics take on an iPhone 4 to an iMac, I receive this message when opening iPhoto 9:

"The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade...."

I'm not sure what this means and why the issue.

I am able to upload pics using the same phone and iPhoto 9 on a different MBP.
