iphoto and itunes both keep freezing after i open them

when i open them they are fine until i try to play a song or view a photo and then i just get the beach ball strange one

any ideas?

on 2009 imac 3.06 ghz intel core 2 duo

4gb memory

10.6.7 all latest software updates
