iPhoto and photo files.

Ok so im not new to mac anymore but I am still having some trouble understanding the new system of it all.

Previously I kept my photos in folders on my windows machine in the 'my pictures' folder.

Now I have used iPhoto which makes a single fumb nail which contains all my pictures in iPhoto.

My question is do I need to keep all the pictures that I have in multiple folders or can I keep them all in iPhoto and just use the single fumb nail saving space?
