I've been using Adobe Lightroom for quite a few years now, since Lightroom 2 at least and have yet to upgrade to LR4. I use LR3 to keep track of all my photos and the lack of feature compatibility with OS X is somewhat painful. I use some of my photos as desktop backgrounds and in order to do that I have to import a file into iPhoto and choose it from there.

I've tried trials of Aperture and I wasn't a huge fan of the dual libraries. Now that iPhoto & Aperture share a library, what is the cross compatibility like? Lightroom isn't a huge step of my workflow, as it's actually the last step. While my experience with Aperture is through trials, the workflow within Aperture was noticeably different. I can get around that though.

If I want to edit a photo inside Aperture, is it as easy as right clicking and selecting "Aperture" or does "Edit" within iPhoto now open Aperture? What's the workflow between iPhoto & Aperture like? Is it worth updating to Aperture for $80 instead of LR4 on the MAS for $150?

Lastly, somewhat unrelated and it may be too early to say but, if I do go with Aperture (or LR4) will the app be updated to the next major version release as a paid app update or will it be a new app entirely? One of the apps I use was updated to Version 2 and it saw a new app upload rather than a paid app update. Are paid app updates not supported anymore? I don't want to update to either app and be hit with a full price purchase again.
