iPhoto/Aperture multiple libraries

I have multiple iPhoto and Aperture Libraries containing about 500 GB, and like to consolidate all my photos into exactly two libraries: one on an external drive containing the bulk of my photos (~450 GB) and one containing recent photos and some old folders/projects on my Macbook Air. I imagine this to be not unlike the iTunes functionality that allows me to store a selection of my pictures on my iPhone, except that in this case (Macbook Air) the selection will be larger.

Is there a way to do this using either iPhoto or Aperture?
