iPhoto constantly crashes when importing iPhone photos to Mac.

I have about 5,000 photos that I need to import from my iPhone to my Mac. I do not want to do it via iCloud backup because I want to have a fresh iPhone. The problem is that my computer literally hangs up with the spinning wheel after it imports around 2,000 photos. Is this a bug with the iPhone, iOS, or iPhoto?
