iPhoto directory structure and rsync

I'm cuurently using rsync to backup my iTunes library using rsync to send a copy to another server. I'd like to do a similar thing with iPhoto but I'm trying to have a better understanding of the directory structure before I decide how to handle it. Are the full size original copies in:

~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals

Are these the full size files that were imported off my camera? Can they just be backed up and read by any machine regardless of the OS?
