iPhoto, does it store my pictures in the library or...

Does it simply link to them? I'm attempting to import about 20 different folders each filled with a good number of pictures and after its done I can only access the pictures if I keep the source files there... Is there a way to have the iPHOTO library store the whole picture?

Does any of that make sense? Sorry if that sounds confusing...

There is an option in Preferences>Advanced to copy or link (at least there is an option in the later versions of iPhoto - not sure about earlier versions). Thumbnails and changes, however, remain in Pictures>iPhoto Library.

Not true.. There is a setting to not copy the picture over. Thanks to everyone for the help!
