iPhoto doesn't load

I have a new 27" iMac and moved my old file from my 2006 Mac by way of time machine. When I try to open iPhoto I get an alert "To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple." This doesn't work and I still can't open iPhoto.
