Iphoto duplicating deleted files

I recently added several photos to my iphoto app then decided to delete them. Since then, when I re-launch Iphoto, it asks if I want to restore these photos (say 100 in total). If I say yes, it duplicates them so the next time I re launch Iphoto it asks asks if I want to recover 200 photos. I have found the folder holding these locked files, have unlocked them and deleted them (Iphoto re-creates them again).

This is only happening to this select group of photos. I can delete others and not have the same issue. I am running Tiger on an Intel IMac and version 7.1.1 of Iphoto.
