iphoto event viewing help

I am having trouble with iphoto within my events. When I open an event, it only shows the photos magnified. I've gone into preferences and it is set to "Show event photos" not "magnifies photos". I've tried everything I can think of from changing preferences and restarting iphoto, to checking for updates and restarting my computer. I've looked at all the quick keys just to make sure I didn't hit anything by accident and I just cannot figure out how to see all the images within an event. If I can't see them, then I also can't manage them or split them up. Needless to say, I'm extremely frustrated. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
