iPhoto Events Screwed Up?

My iPhoto library has been orgainsed into events for ages. I was moving some photos around today and I accidentally selected all the photos and they are now all one big event. I have selected all the photos and tried to split the event but iPhoto won't let me, any ideas as how I can get this back into some sort of order, this is really going to annoy me!

You say "iPhoto won't let me". What exactly happens? What exactly do you tell iPhoto to do? There is an option to create events based on date -- is that what you are doing?
