Iphoto - freezes when i import from external hd

Dont know if this is in the right place, but here goes.

I just got a new iMac and im trying to import all my photos from my other three computers onto this one using iphoto. Total number of photos is about 22,000. Each time i try, even when i break it down into smaller portions and do the folders by year, it gives me issues, it just stops scrolling through the photos at different points every time. Anyone ideas?
