When I take pics with my iPhone, they are uploaded to my photostream and onto iPhoto. For some reason, if I try to attach a photo into a Gmail email (or onto a website form, such as a Craigslist post) the application can't access iPhoto. The only solution I've found is to copy the pictures into a folder in the Photos section of Finder. This works, but it's annoying and I have a feeling I'm doing something wrong.

For example, if I'm composing an email in Gmail, and I click "attach a file", it opens the pictures folder in Finder. "iPhotos" isn't there as a folder -- Finder seems to have it as its own file.

Am I doing something wrong?

Have you tried the "Media" section yet?
