I recently moved my rather large (is 6000 or 7000 photos a large library?) to a new external drive (a Drobo), and it seems to hang up alot. I'll click on a picture, and it'll freeze for a while, then work again. The Drobo has a fast connection, Firewire 800, so I don't think that should be the issue? Anyone know what might be causing this and how to deal with it/fixes etc? thanks!

I'm using the latest system 10.6.6 and the latest up to date iPhoto 11, vers 9.1.1. On a white iMac Core 2 Duo 2.16 ghz. thanks!

I have over 26,000 high resolution (18 megapixel Canon) pics in my iPhoto library and I get kernel panic all the time. I could see how running out to an external could make it worst. I feel your pain.
