Having updated to OS X Yosemite, iPhoto is now gone and I cannot access my photo library. How can I get my photos back after the update?

I have looked in the Users/Sam/Pictures folder where there used to be a file called iPhoto library, but that no longer exists. Instead there is a Photos Library, but that is empty. Where have all my photos gone that were stored in iPhoto and how can I recover them?

I have no backup before the update, so I cannot use that to restore lost photos; I will just have to hope that they are still on there somewhere...

Please help me Apple community!

The update converts your iPhoto library to photos. If you don't have a backup then you're SOL concerning iPhoto but your images are available in Photos.

When I open up the Photos app it says "Welcome to Photos! To get started with Photos do any of the following" blah blah blah. Basically my photos are not loaded into the Photos library and the Users/Sam/Photos Library file is only 5MB when there should be hundreds of photos there...

Thanks for the fast response by the way

Is your iPhoto file still there? I'm not in front of my Mac now, but remember both files (Photos and iPhoto) were in the Photos directory after the conversion.

No the library is gone and appears to be nowhere else on my computer. I have searched for it, but nothing appears to have worked.
