iphoto help how to back up photos on external drive

Hi, I am new to this so please bear with me....
I need to move pictures from iphoto to an external drive to free up space.
I don't want to loose anything in the process.
I am running Tiger 10.4.11 on a powerbook G4 using iphoto 4.0.3 (4h2)
Here are my questions........
1. How do I back up my pictures from iphoto to an external drive
2. How do I safely erase the photos from my main drive
3. How do I look/edit the pictures on the external drive after I have transferred them

1. How do I copy my pictures from iphoto to an external drive
copy your iPhoto library to an external drive.
1a. How do I make a safe copy of them elsewhere for additional security
Use a second external drive, either just for photos, or for Time Machine. If you think its expensive, please envisage yourself here in 6 months when your hard disk dies, asking "hey I just lost all my photos, what can I do?"
2. How do I safely erase the photos from my main drive after I have done 1a
Start up iPhoto holding down OPTION key, select the library on the new HD.
After using this for a few days, drag your original iPhoto library into the trash.
After this continues to work for a few more days, then empty the trash
3. How do I look/edit the pictures on the external drive after I have transferred them
Just use iPhoto
4. How do I backup changed pictures on the external drive
