iPhoto help w/ original dates

I have over 1500 photos in iPhoto and all of them got mixed up because I copy many of my photos and replace and move them around. One day i tried renaming all of them using automator and they get sorted by creation date, not original date taken. So when I try to view them on my windows computer or in the Finder, they're sorted by the date they were created. The only way I can check the original date is by clicking get info for every one of my photos in iPhoto. How can I sort them all by original date?
