iPhoto, how to upload pics?

How do I upload pics from a sony digital camera (cybershot, about a year old)? I figured it would automatically detect the camera and get going, but nothing is really happening. Its probably really simple, but I have never done it before. Thank you.

The camera should appear in the iPhoto sidebar, click on it. From there you can import all or select photos to import.

it should automatically detect it. i know for my canon P&S i have to have it set to view images and then turn it on after i connect the USB cable otherwise it doesn't always figure out its there.

Does it work with any other cameras? If not, go into Applications->Image Capture, and go into Preferences there. Make sure that the option to open iPhoto when a camera is attached is selected. Why this option isn't in the Preference for iPhoto itself still bugs me.
