Edit: fixed this now, it was just some option in the preferences i'd turned off a few months ago and forgotten all about, silly me!

i have a problem with iphoto whilst importing. when i import photos from my camera everything is fine, however if i want to import pictures from other media such as cd/dvds, external HD's or even just attachments in emails or pictures from other places on my mac i hit a snag.

iphoto imports like it should do and everything appears fine...until you remove the media the original pictures were on or delete the original file. for some reason iphoto is not copying the actual files to it's folder.

for example, i'm currently trying to import a load of photo's from a dvd, iphoto imports and creates a new event and everything seems ok but if i then remove the dvd after importing, iphoto now says it can't open any of the pictures because it can't find the originals.

surely this is wrong, iphoto should actually copy the files to its own folder right? do i have some setting wrong?

i had a look at the iphoto folder (show package contents) and imports from my camera are fine, the actual files appear in folders. imports from email attachments and dvds/cds etc though simply show up as alias files or don't appear at all.

i found this webpage whilst searching, could this be my problem?

i ran the example script and although my test picture appears visually in iphoto, it doesn't appear in the iphoto folder.

if this is the case it seems i have to fully remove and re-install iphoto.....any ideas on how to go about a full uninstall? it surely can't be as easy as dragging the app icon to trash.

oh, this is iphoto 08 on my intel imac running 10.5.4 btw.
