iphoto issues

Hi all I have been looking for an answer for some time with no luck . I have a panasonic digital camera Lumix that can take video as well as still pictures . When I record a short video and plug my camera into my IMAC iphoto opens and asks me if I want to import . I say import all (only has the video footage no other photos) it imports the .mov files but i also get the same pictures in jpeg . I then need to delete everything that does not have the video icon in the corner. Does anyone know why i get jpegs . I do not need them . Is it a setting on my camera or iphoto . Please help . I am new to all this and find it hard to understand if its something I have to put up with or something I am doing wrong
