iPhoto keeps freezing my mac when I try to upload pics

Every time I try to add new photos to my iPhoto my whole computer freezes, and I have to re-start. Every now and then, I can upload a few pics, but then I'll try to add more, and it freezes. Why does it do this, and how can I fix it? Detailed instructions would be much appreciated! I have the 8.0 version of iPhoto I think..

Where are you trying to load them from? Camera? Card Reader? Hard drive?

I'm trying to upload from a memory card, but I also tried uploading from a camera and either one still makes it freeze

Do you have another memory card you could try?

No, but I've been using this memory card for awhile then all of a sudden it stopped working. I have all the pics in a folder on my desktop, but my comp still freezes when I try to upload those into iPhoto.
