iPhoto lagging

hi, i have a macbook pro 13 (june 2009)
ever since upgrading to snow leopard i have noticed a problem.
when zooming in and panning photos using trackpad gestures, it has extreme lag on iphoto.
so much so i have to use the navigation box on screen and pan using that.
I am only using photos from a sony 12mp camera, not an slr or anything.

any ideas why its lagging, or how to fix it ?
