iPhoto library on external drive very jerky

I've put my iPhoto library on an external drive connected via USB 2.0, but it's very jerky when I scroll through 'Events' or 'Photos..
Once I've entered an album it doesn't jerk as much, and I don't have any other problems
I've seen soooo many threads telling people to put their library on an external drive but haven't seen anyone post about these problems.. :\

I have 35000 pictures, amounting to around 100gb, is it the size of my library that's causing the slowness?
