iPhoto Not Loading Properly

When i go to load iPhoto on my 2010 MBP and when i loads it just sits at the main screen with the spinning circle. None of the panels on the left hand side load, and it just sits with the spinning loading sign, not the beach ball, the white circle.

Do i need to perform a clean install of iLife?
If so, will that be on the Mac OS X Applications Disc i got from Apple with my MacBook, as iLife 11 came preinstalled?
will i have lost the projects i've made/will i lose them when i do the install?
