I recently installed iLife 11 on my Macbook Pro and when i attempt to open iPhoto I get a message that says "In order to open iPhoto you need to update to the latest version". Currently i've been holding off on doing a software update since i'm still on Mavericks and i'm on an older mid 2009 Macbook Pro and i do not want to update to Yosemite as of yet. If i do a software update would I get a choice to update iPhoto instead of Yosemite? or does iPhoto need the latest OS version to run?

iPhoto is now known as "Photos" like it is on iOS, it has been completely revamped. I am not sure if requires Yosemite but I don't see why it would.

Nope, iPhoto is still there as a separate app to Photos.app and you can continue using it if you want.
