In iPhoto is there an option so that I can manage my own photos?

For example, normally I'll copy some photos to a folder called Pictures; then import it into iPhoto. This makes another copy in the 'Photo Library' file. Is there a way so that iPhoto doesn't create another copy of my photos?

If you go into preferences and then advanced you can take the tick out of copy into library

all future pictures will stay where you put them and iphoto will just use them from there

unsure if you can do anything with current photos in library (easily)
