iPhoto photos show up blank

Hi,
The HD on my Early 2009 Mac Mini died last week, so I replaced it and restored from my last Time Machine backup.
Since then, most of my Photos for the last 5-6 months show up as blank in iPhoto. It appears that the photos are still "there", I just can't see them or do anything with them. Just the dashed border around black emptiness. I can't open or edit them, however I do see thumbnails along the top of the iPhoto window in edit mode, but the photo I choose to edit just shows up blank in the main window. I can't drag them to the desktop either.
I've tried repairing permissions, rebuilding iPhoto library MANY times, and even pulling up old iPhoto libraries from Time Machine, and I get the same results.
This is really irritating since keeping my photos safe is the main reason I set up the whole Time Machine backup drive in the first place. Everything BUT my photos seems to have backed up and restored fine.
Does anyone have suggestions?
I'm on OS 10.7.4 with iPhoto 8.1.2. Everything was working fine before, so I'd rather not update the OS or iPhoto unless I really have to.

Thanks in advance,
tys
