iphoto printing help

I am currently using iphoto 11 for my mac. after spending hours working on editing pictures from this years wedding season, I took them to print and the quality was horrific. Distortion, and blurred, grainy and a total disappointment. How can I get my pictures to print off in the beautiful clear way in which I see them finished on my screen?
