iPhoto problem - cannot see thumbnails

I recently upgraded to iLife08. In iPhoto, when I select an Event, I only see 1 photo - no thumbnails. The preferences button for "double click event" is show event photos. When I select view and thumbnails, all selections are grayed out. I have the same problem in the Photos folder - no thumbnails. Does anyone know how I can see thumbnails in the Photo folder and when I double click an event?
