As often as not, if I select an image name in Spotlight, iPhoto opens and displays a completely unrelated picture. This is after completely deleting my iPhoto Library and re-importing every single photo back in to create a new library. Where is this bogus metadata coming from?

Weirdness. Does it do the same if you use the search feature within iPhoto? Maybe it's a Spotlight issue in which case reindexing the drive may help. The quickest way to do this is to head over to trusty ol' System Preferences, and in the Privacy tab of the Spotlight pane, add your hard drive. Close System Preferences, reopen it and head back to this ol' Privacy pane and remove your hard drive. It'll take a little while to reindex your drive. :)

I'm giving that a go. iPhoto itself seems to search OK. I entered the word "tom" and it came up with fifteen pictures of my son and one of the tomb of Napoleon!
