iPhoto question

I have a Canon PowerShot SD450 and I hate the programs that came with it. I just want to load my pictures from my camera into my computer and I'm good to go. I love iPhoto, but is there a way so that it can recognize the photos I have already loaded onto my Macbook and those that I haven't loaded? I like to keep my photos on my camera for a bit until I'm sure that I won't need them on the camera's memory. I would hate to choose all the pictures that I need to load or use the Canon software.

It should tell you before loading on duplicates. Isn't it doing this?

use the image capture app. it will show you all your cameras photos on its flash memory. then just organise your photos into added yesterday or something then match them up
