iPhoto question

all of my photos (i have about 10,000+) are on an external hard drive. i want to organize and set them up in iPhoto. can i do this without iPhoto copying the photos onto my iMac's hard drive leaving the photos on the external hard drive? if so, how do i do this?

Yours are already on the external, so skip that part, but it should tell you how to access them. Basically, create a new iPhoto library on your external, import the photos into it, and then point iPhoto to that directory. It will stay pointed at that directory until you manually change the directory by holding down the option key while starting iPhoto, and selecting a different drive.
