...but Mac App Store software update tab says I've already updated to version 9.6. I'm using Yosemite and it isn't crashing...is it possible I really do have version 9.6 but the iPhoto "about" window isn't updated properly. Can someone else check their setup? Thanks.

iPhoto still says its version 9.5.1

Despite the download being complete in 5 or 6 minutes, it took launchpad a day to start actually doing the install on this Mac. Apple may be fudging a bit on appearance vs reality here. Give things another day or so to calm down at the server farms.
