Hi,

Just bought an iMac with a 320Gb HDD. I also have a 500Gb external drive.

I would like my iPhoto library to use the external HDD directly so that i can leave the built in HDD free. Is there anyway to do this?

At the moment, iPhoto and Frontrow default to looking at the standard photos and movies folder.

I realise now that i should have just bought a bigger HDD in the first place.

Thanks,

Lazzer

Change the name of your iPhoto Library in its standard place. When iPhoto starts, it will ask you if you want to create a new one or find an existing one.

I think there's a knowledge base article on this somewhere, but it's pretty safe to try.

I do that when I'm traveling-- I have a library locally that holds a subset of "pictures to show people", and the external drive is where I store images from the trip.

Thanks,

Also, i assume there is no way to create sub events?

I'd like to organise my photos into sections with sections within that so for example the following folder structure:

Cars > Escort
FTO
Ferrari

Bikes > Yamaha
Suzuki
Kawasaki

Is this possible to do?

As you can probably guess, i'm a new mac user :)

I don't know that you can do that as sub-events. I think you'd have to rely on folders and albums to do that. There should be a + button in the bottom left. Not sure if you can get folders that way-- maybe the gear button if there is one, or option click the +.

I mostly work with Aperture so I'm not as familiar with the newer versions of iPhoto.

I can't find a way to do sub events, so i have just had to organise the events in a easy to find way. Oh well. Hopefully Apple will change this in the future.

As for moving your library, here is what Apple says: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229

Do not do any organizing in iPhoto in the library in finder. Stay out of that file. Do your organizing within the app itself. While you can't create sub-"events", you can easily organize your photos. You create folders -- Cars. Then create albums, Ferrari, Escort, etc. and put each one into the folder. Easy as pie! You can have the folders collapsed so you don't have to look at the albums if you don't want to. Makes it look really nice and neat.

Welcome to macs!
