iPhoto to Flickr

Why is it when I upload photos to Flickr from iPhoto then delete them on iPhoto they are deleted on my Flickr. The point of putting them on Flickr is to save precious space on my hard drive! I can of course directly upload using Flickr uploader but still would like to know if there is a way of using iPhoto to upload to Flickr without loosing my photos.
