iPhoto Trash multicolor disc forever!

So I upload many gigs of images into my iphoto off my external hd and I decide to dump many folders into the trash. After completing the cleaning of my library, I realize that maybe some folders shouldnt have been dumped...so I try to go to the trash to see if they are there to be recovered and EVERYTIME i go to the trash within iphoto I get the multicolor "hourglass" spinning forever! all I can do is force quit and this process happens everytime I try to go into that trash within iphoto. How can I fix this issue???
