I just bought a macbook pro and I have a photo library with 15,000 photos on an external hard drive that I'm bringing over from a g5 imac. It really brought the imac to its knees whenever I loaded iphoto so I don't want it to load all those pictures each time that I run iphoto but I would like it to load them when I plug in the external hard drive. Is this possible? I know that you can point it to other picture locations with iphoto but will it get screwed up when I disconnect? Let me know what you guys think!

I keep most of my photos on an external to free up drive space on my HD. Works just fine. No problem when it gets unplugged, you just don't have access to your photos. I created another iPhoto library on my HD and keep recent photos there so they are available all the time. Still no problems. Good Luck!
