iphoto11 loses pse landscape edits... any help?

I frequently edit the photos that I keep in Iphoto via pse. When I open a portait oriented photo in pse (from iphoto), i can do my edits and they are saved in iphoto just fine. Oddly, when I do the same thing with a landscape oriented photo, i photo "loses" the newly edited picture. There is a thumbnail visible in iphoto, but when i click on it, I get the "!" When I look in the folder via finder, the photos are still visible there, but they don't have the white border that all of the others do... not sure why. This is making me crazy.. any help???
