This is the first thing I wish for, when jailbreak comes out for the iPod 4 :)

This is interesting because im pretty sure its possible, i heard somewhere that they put somewhat of a crop size at the .7 mp line, but im yet to hear the possibility of cracking that limit :(

The camera sensor is 960x720. When recording video, it upscales the image to 720p. The new touch does not shoot true HD video.

Where did you get that info? I'm pretty sure it is only the app cropping the picture so it becomes a more familiar 4/3 ratio, instead of 16/9, which is fairly uncommon in photography.

From anandtech review:

Apple advertises the rear facing camera as being able to record 720p video, however that’s not exactly true. Photos are shot at 960 x 720 but video is shot at 1280 x 720. Apple appears to be using a 960 x 720 sensor to cut costs, but upscaling video to 1280 x 720

AnandTech's description does not appear to be accurate. I did some side-by-side video and the photos with the ipod in a fixed position and the photos are very obviously the same as the video, except cropped on the left and right 160 pixels - i.e., the photos are cropped compared to videos, and the video is NOT an upscaled photo that AnandTech implies.

I'm a little surprised and puzzled that a tech-focused site would get this mixed up.

You'd need an anamorphic lens to make it work, but how would you take photos at 4/3 ratio then?
