iPod American Purchase (Help)

Please help.
A colleague has offered to purchase an iPod/iPod Mini for me during a trip to America to take advantage of the exchange rate. I'm sorely tempted — but what's the guarantee situation? Does anyonne know if I'll be storing up problems for myself. Would I be better just saving up a bit longer and buying in Britain?
Any advice gratefully received. :)
