iPod basics

If I plug the iPod into my USB port, will it charge it? Today I went to do that, and it was completely dead and wouldn't mount or anything...

I had to find the base station and plug it into that and it's now charging.

click on apple logo top right and click about this mac then more info that will tell you what you have

It was a picture of a battery and a quarter to the left a jagged line through it. Nothing lit up.

chances are you have it mounted in itunes - try ejecting it and then it will show the charging bit
