iPod broken after battery replacement

I bought a Newer Tech battery for my 3rd gen 10 GB iPod, which was a little more than a year old and which couldn't hold a charge well anymore. After replacing the battery, I cannot get the controls on the unit to function. I am stuck with the iPod menu somewhere in the "languages" section of the preferences menu. The iPod appears normally on the desktop and in iTunes, etc. I have performed a Software Update on it and run Diskwarrior on it. The Genius at the AppleStore kind of shrugged his shoulders and told me that it would be more cost effective to buy a new one than to pay them to try to repair it... any ideas from the crowd here?
