Hi there,

I'm sure many folks here have fond memories of some of the games that you could get with the clickwheel iPods. Many of these were at risk of being lost to time forever, given that they are no longer accessible and protected by DRM.

There were 54 such games released, of which 44 have been archived and preserved, thanks to the efforts of a Reddit user named Olsro. Here's an ArsTechnica article about it which was published today: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2024...serve-54-lost-clickwheel-era-games/#gsc.tab=0

There are only 12 games remaining for archival, and as the article explains, the moment Apple shuts off their servers for authentication, they will for all intents and purposes be lost forever, so this is very much a race against time.

If you have any of these games on any of your old clickwheel iPods, it would be deeply appreciated if you could come forward.

I have fond memories of playing Sonic (badly) on a 5th gen Classic. The game would stutter when the iPods drive spun up or wound down.

Later, on a 3rd gen Nano, I learned the wonders of gaming from a device with flash storage - a lesson as a kid that’s stuck with me!

This is a very cool initiative that I wouldn’t have otherwise heard of had you not shared it here. Following this thread! Very interesting project to say the least.
